Non customer facing jobs
On this page
Non customer facing jobs keep you away from serving the public for most of the day. You might work with stock, records, machines, samples, systems or tools instead, although almost every job still involves some contact with colleagues.
Right now Vocatia lists 11,276 UK jobs where serving customers isn't part of the job. The most common are warehouse operative, administrator and accounts assistant. (Live figures, 20 October 2026.)

What does non customer facing mean day to day?
It usually means customers are not the main focus of your shift. Your work supports the organisation from behind the scenes: preparing orders, keeping records accurate, cleaning a building, testing samples, maintaining equipment or making products.
It does not always mean working alone. A warehouse operative may spend all day with the same team. A laboratory technician works alongside scientists. A back-office administrator may speak to colleagues throughout the day. The difference is that you are not continually serving customers, handling complaints or answering public enquiries.
If being on your own is the main thing you want, our guide to jobs working alone explains solo shifts, check-ins and safety.
Job titles can be misleading. An "administrator" might process records quietly, or they might run a busy reception. An IT support job might maintain systems behind the scenes, or spend the day on a help desk. Always check the duties rather than relying on the title.

Types of behind-the-scenes work
Warehouse and logistics
Warehouse workers receive deliveries, move and store goods, check stock, pick orders and prepare items for dispatch. The work is often physical and may involve shifts, targets, scanners or lifting equipment. You will usually work with colleagues, but many roles have little direct customer contact.
Data and back-office administration
Behind-the-scenes office work can include maintaining records, checking forms, processing invoices, entering data, preparing reports and organising documents. Look for "back office", "records", "processing" or "operations support". Check whether the advert also mentions reception, incoming calls or being a first point of contact.
Cleaning and facilities
Cleaners, caretakers and facilities assistants keep workplaces safe and ready to use. Some cleaning happens before or after the public arrives, which can mean quiet working but also early mornings, evenings or split shifts. Cleaning in homes, hotels or occupied buildings can still involve customers.
Manufacturing and production
Production operatives make, assemble, inspect, pack or label products. The work may follow a set process on a line or at a workbench. Factories can be noisy, and some jobs involve protective clothing, repetitive tasks or rotating shifts.

Field Service Engineer
£35,000–£45,000 a year
Laboratories and quality work
Laboratory technicians prepare samples, carry out tests, record results, maintain equipment and follow safety procedures. Quality control and testing roles appear in manufacturing, food production, healthcare and environmental work. Entry requirements vary, so check the qualifications in each advert.
Technical work behind the scenes
Some technology jobs focus on networks, servers, security, databases or internal systems rather than customers. Be careful with "IT support": many support technicians answer requests from staff or customers by phone, online or face to face. Look for infrastructure, maintenance, monitoring or internal systems if you want less contact.
Driving, delivery and trades
HGV driving, depot work, maintenance and some skilled trades can involve long stretches focused on the task. Delivery van work usually includes brief customer contact for handovers, signatures or problems, so it may suit someone who wants limited contact rather than none.

How to spot these jobs in an advert
Wording that can point to behind-the-scenes work includes:
- back office, internal operations or business support
- processing records, orders, invoices or applications
- working independently or managing your own workload
- stock control, picking, packing or dispatch
- production, assembly, testing or quality control
- maintenance, repair or preventative checks
- internal systems, infrastructure or monitoring
Wording that suggests regular customer contact includes:
- customer facing, front of house or reception
- first point of contact
- inbound or outbound calls
- handling enquiries, complaints or bookings
- building client relationships or account management
- sales targets, upselling or commission
- excellent telephone manner
Read the whole advert. "Occasional contact" may be fine for you, while "supporting customers throughout their journey" usually means contact is central to the job.
The honest trade-offs
Less customer contact can make the day feel calmer, but the work may have other demands:
- warehouse, cleaning and production jobs can be physical
- quiet cleaning, logistics and factory work may happen early, late or overnight
- repetitive work can suit some people and feel dull to others
- working alone means less interruption, but also less company and immediate help
- jobs with little public contact still involve instructions, handovers and teamwork
- delivery and maintenance work may involve travel and changing locations
If you work alone, your employer still has to manage the risks. HSE says employers must assess lone-working risks, keep in touch and respond properly if something goes wrong. Check how supervision, breaks and emergency contact work before accepting a role.
How to find jobs without customer service
Start with the things you do want. Choose "Working alone" if you prefer independent tasks, "On a computer" for records and systems, or "With my hands" for practical work. Add "Steady routine" if a predictable pattern matters to you.
Use the non customer facing jobs page to leave out adverts where serving customers is a main part of the work. Use the no-phone page if you also want jobs with no phone calls. You can add your town and combine either page with the other options.

Common questions
Are there office jobs with no customer contact?
Yes. Records, data, payroll, finance processing, compliance and internal operations can all be behind the scenes. Read the duties carefully because some administration jobs also cover reception, email enquiries or phone calls.
Can I find jobs with no phone calls?
Yes, particularly in production, warehouses, laboratories, cleaning, maintenance and some computer-based roles. An advert asking for a good telephone manner, call handling or help-desk work is unlikely to fit.
Do non customer facing jobs mean working alone?
No. Many involve close teamwork without serving the public. Manufacturing, warehousing and laboratories are good examples. Add the "Working alone" option if independent work matters as well.
Which entry-level jobs are behind the scenes?
Warehouse, packing, cleaning and production jobs often train people at work. Some office and laboratory roles ask for particular qualifications or experience, so check each advert.
